The new single-chip satellite receivers integrate VLSI's true variable-rate QPSK (Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) A phase modulation technique that transmits two bits in four modulation states. Before transmission, the data are processed through an algorithm that adds extra bits for error correction. If the transmitted message is received in error, the correction bits are used to repair it. FEC - Forward Error Correction ) functions for existing and future digital video set-top box applications. The VES1789 operates anywhere between 1 and 60 MHz and the pin-compatible VES1790 version has a broader operational range of 1 MHz up to 90 MHz. Both chips are identical in all other performance and physical specifications.
